The Bear Essentials

My new hero is a man named Eddie “Bear” Grylls. You may have seen him on his TV show, Man V. Wild on the Discovery Channel. He explores some of the most dangerous places on the earth and explains how to survive under the most extreme circumstances. What you might not know is that Bear broke his back in 3 places some years ago, only to recover and become the youngest person in history to climb the summit of Mount Everest (he was only 23!!).

What you might also not know is that Bear is a Christian and was recently interviewed in Christianity magazine. On his website he was asked this question:

How is your Christian faith important to you?
It feels like the rock in my life and it has taken me a long time to no longer be afraid to say that. But I have learnt that it takes a proud man to say he needs nothing. Faith gives me a strong backbone and when we find that within ourselves we can then live more exciting, effective, kind, passionate and giving lives. Life has a meaning again. It doesn’t though make life easier in any way, and I still battle with my fair share of struggles and doubt and often great self-doubt, but that is just the product of trying to stretch beyond the norm and to live life fully. I depend on a few simple verses everyday that have held me thro so many tough times. They are a mix of these:

  • ‘I am here to help you’
  • ‘I am holding you by your right hand’
  • ‘The lord himself watches over you’

That’s it for me in a nutshell.

I am not sure what those verses are, but I do know that he recommends a few prominent authors and I have heard him talk about his faith on the show. What I think strikes me the deepest however is his passion and intensity to push the limits of his body and mind and it makes me wonder if I am pushing the limits and living a risky, pain-forgetting life for the King who bought me. I am just a lover of passion and angst and this guy has it.

Filling Our Affections…

John Owen said: “Fill your affections with the Cross of Christ, that there may be no room for sin.” (Indwelling Sin)

This past Sunday we looked at 7 reasons as to why Christ died. Here they are.
To bring us to God (1Peter 3:18)
To satisfy the wrath of God (1Thessalonians 1:10)
To show the real meaning of marriage (Ephesians 5:31-32)
To show that God withholds no good from us (Romans 8:30-32)
To offer ultimate satisfaction (John 6:35)
To show that God uses evil to bring about good (Acts 4:27-28)
So that we might not waste our lives (Galatians 6:14)
You can hear the full sermon here or get the podcast.

Yearn

holy design
this place in time
that i might seek and find my God
my God

Lord i want to yearn for You
i want to burn with passion
over You and only You
Lord i want to yearn

Your joy is mine
yet why am i fine
with all my singing and bringing grain
in light of Him

oh You give life and breath
through Him You give all things
in Him we live and move
that’s why i sing

Acts 17:25-28, Hebrews 12:28-29

Into the Blogosphere

Over the past year I have written a blog from our church’s website. I have really enjoyed it and want to occasionally post things pertaining to our church, however, I wanted to branch out a little more and write on some things that are a bit more personal as well as document our pregnancy a little closer. This will allow me to post videos and pictures that are really not “church issues.” As a result I have chosen to create a new blog entitles YEARN. Hope you will make a point to visit occassionally and subscribe to the blog as well as leave comments and suggestions. The amount of posts will depend on you, so feel free to raise any questions and respond as much as you want. The goal of this blog is to stir an affection for God in all things. Hope to hear from you!

Yearning,
Greg B
